Liz and Greg Newton
Partners for the past 39 years, we have travelled many a road and a seaway across the globe. Like many Aussies we have backpacked it through Asia, driven the orange Kombi through Europe, sailed the Pacific, paddled down the Okavango Delta, done the safari thing in South Africa, hob nobbed it in New York, trekked through India and sailed square riggers on the Mediterranean.
For us, the 2010 Peking to Paris represents the penultimate challenge. Buying our stead, preparing her to cope with the conditions and then driving her together unassisted half way around the globe.
With my mechanical experience – a tinkerer from way back, and Liz’s medical skills gained from a career in the health care system (albeit mental health which could be a big advantage by day 30), we aim to keep us three old dogs on the road for the 14,000 km journey.
And the car Thing
Having met on a car trial in 1972, Liz and I naturally had an instant affinity with things sporting and fast. Though in those days it was usually fast to a pub, a BBQ or a picnic
Aside from our interest in competitive sailing, over the years we have owned almost 120 cars, from Anglias to Cortina GT’s and Cooper S’s through to more exotic fare such as NSU Ro80’s, a Maserati Sebring, Alfa Spider, Monaro GTS 327, Torana GTR, Jaguar E type, Jaguar 150 Drophead and the list goes on.
Today the fleet is a little more refined and includes:
- 02’ Mercedes CLK 500
- 08’ BMW 530i Touring
- 65’ Porsche 356SC
- 56’ Bentley S1 Mulliner Drophead
- 85’ Ferrari Mondial
- 52’ Holden 48-215
Naturally the Merc and BMW are our everyday drives. The Bentley is primarily used for Mother’s Day or the kids’ weddings, the Porsche and Ferrari for fast weekend trips, club breakfasts and the like and the Holden – well naturally for the 2010 Peking to Paris!
We look forward to the drive, the friends, the challenge and the fun!
